The first therapy session should be more administrative than actual therapy. I always give my clients a spiel about me as the therapist doing most the talking in the first session, but then they do the heavy lifting by doing the majority of the talking in the following sessions. The first session is really about getting a snapshot of the client, history, and what they’re looking for in therapy.

My first therapy session was very validating and freeing. We spent a lot of time getting to know me and discussing what brought me to therapy. I think it is important for a therapist to explain how therapy works, especially with confidentiality and how to ensure the safety of the patient. I felt optimisitc about going back for future sessions
