When you feel comfortable being vulnerable with them and feel as though you are their only concern during their time with you. If you feel seen and heard, and feel progress is going to be made.

Although I think “venting” is a part of therapy, therapists should also be redirecting you and giving you skills to apply in those situations. If the therapist is just there for the tea and not supporting change, they aren’t the one.

It is important to research what type of therapy you believe would fit for your, there are so many different types out there. Additionally, it is important that a therapist is actively listening, not distracted and makes you feel validated. You might not be able to tell if a therapist is right for you after the first session, so be sure to pay attention closely to things you like and dislike from your sessions

Do you feel safe opening up to them? Do they listen without judgment and validate your experiences and feelings? A good fit doesn’t mean they’ll agree with everything you say, but you should feel respected and supported even when they challenge you. It’s also important that their approach matches your needs— whatever that is.
