I recently learned this strategy that I think is really great for issues like this! You open your palm and trace/write the word “person” onto it. Then, close your palm and pretend to swallow/chew the word. It may sound silly but doesn’t everything before you try it? I find it works for me.

One thing that helps me is having a drink in my hands to have something to do. If I have a coffee or a water while I am in public, I don’t ring my hands or scratch at my cuticles.

When I was dealing with extreme anxiety I decided to start keeping mints and gum on me. If I started feeling the symptoms of anxiety I would just eat a couple of mints or chew flavored gum to take my mind off of it. Listening to music helps and also paying more attention to your surroundings will realign your focus. some people will begin to pinch or scratch themselves and it is important to stay away from these behaviors. Things like this are still considered self-injurious behaviors, so watch out for this.
