What’s your favorite way to relax after a stressful day?
A good workout to compartmentalize stress by outputting stress on your body. It helps the flow of endorphins while simultaneously giving an outlet of emotion.

What’s one psychological concept that helped you better understand yourself?
Genetics can play a bigger role in our mental health than we give credit to! Read “It Didn’t Start With You” by Mark Wolynn to understand how deep trauma can run, and so much so that it can be generational.

How do you separate work life from personal life?
Keep your work email off your phone. There is no reason to be checking your email off hours, you’re not getting paid for that, and it will be there the next work day.

What’s the biggest myth about going to therapy?
That the therapist has all the answers. The client is the one doing the work, not the therapist. Think of therapists as the bumpers that come up to redirect your bowling ball when it’s going down the lane. Therapists are there to redirect the conversation or keep you focused on the end goals.

How do you maintain a positive outlook during difficult times?
Writing positives on the day, even if they are small. “I woke up this morning”, “my coffee was delicious”, “The weather was beautiful”, etc… Using positive verbiage is the same idea as that trick of smiling at yourself in the mirror. Granted, this is just to help lighten around the difficult times, not diminish them or minimize them.

What’s one thing that helps you manage anxiety in public settings?
One thing that helps me is having a drink in my hands to have something to do. If I have a coffee or a water while I am in public, I don’t ring my hands or scratch at my cuticles.

How do you balance school and mental health?
It’s important to compartmentalize and not let school consume you all day every day like it easily can. Create hours or time slots in your day for “you time” whether that’s a walk, a hike, a workout class, or just time to journal or read. The key is to put it in your schedule though… if you write it down or block out that time, it’s more…

Is happiness something you pursue actively or let happen naturally?
I used to let it happen naturally, but now that I am always trying to actively pursue it, it has almost become addicting to consistently find happiness in my day to outweigh any negatives. I am loving this new approach because I feel happiness is much more frequent when you’re actively chasing and attracting.
