Going to the gym- it makes me feel like I’m in control and other things are prioritized over work, especially after a demanding day.

I think the main factor of gaining trust is through experience. AI needs to be dependable and worth putting trust into, really like anything else!

It is feeling like it! Even on this site, AI is providing simple coping skills- that is something I never thought could be possible, but here we are!

Taking a break from social media… if you are constantly comparing based off what others are posting, then remove it! You don’t need to be spending your free time and energy on analyzing their post and how “perfect” it appears to be. Remember, editing and only posting the good is a real thing. You are most likely comparing yourself to a false reality.

Quick tips or ideas for selfcare or mindfulness. Go to resources, like books or podcasts to help with something specific when prompted.

Walking without music. Just being present in the moment, listening to the sounds around me, and focusing on each step and each breath. Slow it all down!

The first therapy session should be more administrative than actual therapy. I always give my clients a spiel about me as the therapist doing most the talking in the first session, but then they do the heavy lifting by doing the majority of the talking in the following sessions. The first session is really about getting a snapshot of the client, history, and what they’re looking for in therapy.

When you feel comfortable being vulnerable with them and feel as though you are their only concern during their time with you. If you feel seen and heard, and feel progress is going to be made.

Although I think “venting” is a part of therapy, therapists should also be redirecting you and giving you skills to apply in those situations. If the therapist is just there for the tea and not supporting change, they aren’t the one.

A good workout to compartmentalize stress by outputting stress on your body. It helps the flow of endorphins while simultaneously giving an outlet of emotion.

  • Genetics can play a bigger role in our mental health than we give credit to! Read “It Didn’t Start With You” by Mark Wolynn to understand how deep trauma can run, and so much so that it can be generational.

Keep your work email off your phone. There is no reason to be checking your email off hours, you’re not getting paid for that, and it will be there the next work day.

That the therapist has all the answers. The client is the one doing the work, not the therapist. Think of therapists as the bumpers that come up to redirect your bowling ball when it’s going down the lane. Therapists are there to redirect the conversation or keep you focused on the end goals.

Writing positives on the day, even if they are small. “I woke up this morning”, “my coffee was delicious”, “The weather was beautiful”, etc… Using positive verbiage is the same idea as that trick of smiling at yourself in the mirror. Granted, this is just to help lighten around the difficult times, not diminish them or minimize them.

This is so true! Especially in more challenging fields who are supporting others, it should be a given to have mental health support to take care of themselves too. I also think there should be a different bank for Mental Health days. People shouldn’t have to take sick days to recoup. And let’s be honest… how many PTO days are people taking in the year that is really vacation? Probably not a lot. Unfortunately people have to save and take PTO for kids and other family members being sick, or school getting cancelled from weather, or doctor appointments… not exactly quality R&R!
